MORRISSEY AND I: An Imagined Conversation

MORRISSEY AND I:
An Imagined Conversation

The Smiths Tour Poster 1986

Having given the matter a lot of thought over the years, I realise that Morrissey was beckoning to me a good while before I became a devotee of both his and The Smiths. The problem is that I wasn't quite ready yet, at least not until the year in which Mozzer launched his solo career anyway. Better late than never!

1986 - 13/14 Years Old

THE SMITHS - PANIC

Its infuriating catchiness appealed to the massive Pop Head that I was at the time, despite me not being a fan of The Smiths. I did like Morrissey's stance on the monarchy, however.

Panic

MORRISSEY: Angie!
ANGIE: [Half glances in the direction of Morrissey’s voice] What?
MORRISSEY: Come here!
ANGIE: I'm busy!

THE SMITHS - ASK

I absolutely adored the video, and it was another delightfully snappy number which I was somewhat partial to.

Ask

MORRISSEY: Angie!
ANGIE: [Pays just a wee bit more attention than last time] What is it?
MORRISSEY: Come over here!
ANGIE: I'm BUSY, I'll be there in a minute!

1987 - 14/15 Years Old

THE SMITHS - GIRLFRIEND IN A COMA

Released on my 15th birthday. I loved the gorgeous, tinkly music matched perfectly with the doleful, bleak lyrics. A very amusing track which my black sense of humour found most entertaining.

Girlfriend In A Coma

MORRISSEY: Angie!
ANGIE: [Actually turns head towards Morrissey] What is it NOW?
MORRISSEY: Get over here!
ANGIE: I'm STILL busy, I'll catch you later on!

The Smiths split up at this point. I had no idea then just how significant their output would become to me a year on in Nineteen Eighty Hate.

1988 - 15/16 Years Old

MORRISSEY - SUEDEHEAD

I was still at school, just, and I rather liked Morrissey's first solo single as it was most pleasant on the old ears.

Suedehead

MORRISSEY: ANGIE!
ANGIE: [Looks Morrissey right in the eye] What do you WANT?
MORRISSEY: Come here, NO
W!
ANGIE: I haven't got time at the moment, it'll have to be tomorrow!

MORRISSEY - EVERYDAY IS LIKE SUNDAY

The song that changed not just the direction, but the very fabric, of my life forevermore, literally as I was leaving school!

Everyday Is Like Sunday

MORRISSEY: For the LAST bloody TIME! Angela Jennifer LEWIS!
ANGIE: [Starts to hesitantly approach Morrissey, who is stood waiting with his arms folded in indignation] Yes, what is it?
MORRISSEY: Come here this very instant, you disobedient child!
ANGIE: [Drops everything on the spot without a second thought and runs to Morrissey]
Here I am Morrissey my darling, now, today, tomorrow and ALWAYS!

THE SMITHS - RANK

This is the album that blew my tiny little mind, and saw me become an unapologetic fan of The Smiths overnight.

Rank

MORRISSEY: [Waves at Angie] Hello, Angel
ANGIE: [Skips over to Morrissey] Yes Morrissey, what do you need from me my beloved?
MORRISSEY: It's time for you to be brave now, and take the next step
ANGIE: [Sighs heavily] Do I have to, Morrissey? I'm scared! My family won't understand, and there aren't many of your followers who look like me.
I stand out as it is!
MORRISSEY: [Gently takes Angie's hands in his] Yes Angie my dear, I’m afraid you must.  But please don't worry, because I love you and I will until the end of days
ANGIE: [Flashes dimpled beam of a smile] That's all I needed to know, thank you Morrissey [Buys Rank, life is shaken to its core, indeed, its very foundations, for the second time in a year]

The rest, as they say, is history...

Morrissey at Manchester Arena in 2016

MORRISSEY – MANCHESTER ARENA SATURDAY, 20 AUGUST 2016 Vocals: MORRISSEY Guitars: BOZ BOORER Guitars: JESSE TOBIAS Bass: MANDO LOPEZ Drums: MATT WALKER Keyboards: GUSTAVO MANZUR Support: DAMIEN DEMPSEY Poster for Manchester Arena Gig For a myriad of reasons which I’ll save for sharing with you all on another day, I hadn’t even CONTEMPLATED , yet alone been interested in, going to a Mozzer gig for a HUGE amount of time! My last one being Drury Lane Theatre in London way back in February 1995 ( over 21 YEARS ago!! ).  When Moz declared in 2015 that he wasn’t going to come back to the UK to play, I have to admit that I was, as well as being a mite bemused, pretty damned devastated, and a part of me actually died if the truth be known.  I was worried that I’d left it too late and that I’d never lay eyes on my beloved Misery Mozzery again!  DISASTER !  He’s such a massive Diva!  Having said that, I DO like a man who can have a tantrum-le...

MORRISSEY – FIRST DIRECT ARENA, LEEDS FRIDAY, 06 MARCH 2020 Vocals:  MORRISSEY Guitars:  BOZ BOORER Guitars:  JESSE TOBIAS Bass:  MANDO LOPEZ Drums:  MATT WALKER Keyboards:  GUSTAVO MANZUR Support:  None Moz Tour Poster 2020: All four European Dates.  Sadly, Paris was called off due to the Corona virus (aka  Miley Cyrus) Before I begin, if I may, I’d like to go back in the mists of time now to two years ago.  After the European tour was pulled in the summer of 2018, I really thought that Moz would never play in Blighty again. I had tickets for both of the Manchester Castlefield Bowl dates, as did some of my friends who had travelled all the way from the US and Canada, and we were all devastated to say the very least. Please do forgive my rant now, but a certain so-called “Superstar” DJ who held his pathetic little anti-Morrissey event on the same night as the ill-fated first Castlefield date, who wa...
