KILL UNCLE
30 Year Anniversary 1991-2021
The classic Kill Uncle sleeve
Dickie Felton, boss chap and author of The Day I Met Morrissey and Morrissey International Airport - Travels with a Pop Star and his People, kindly invited me to get involved in a project he's undertaken to mark the 30 year anniversary (I KNOW!) of the release of Mozzer's second solo studio album Kill Uncle: https://dickiefelton.com/2021/01/22/kill-uncle-at-30-oddball-album-or-timeless-classic/
Below are the questions Dickie asked, together with my responses:
Name: Angie Cooke (nee Lewis)
Age: 48
Where are you from: Huddersfield, England, UK
Can you remember buying Kill Uncle?
Yes, on cassette as that was my format of choice at the time. Affordable and portable, what's not to love? I still have it, too!
Me with my original Kill Uncle (on tape!), purchased at the time of release in 1991
What did you think of the record?
I liked it, but at the time I didn't think it was as good as Mozzer's debut studio release Viva Hate or the compilation Bona Drag
What is your favourite song on it?
Sing Your Life, the message in the song is so positive which I've always loved
Where do you think KU sits in Morrissey's catalogue of work?
As I see it, KU is pretty whimsical in places but at the same time it packs a punch when you least expect it. I would say that I believe it's up there with his very best now, it's definitely grown on me over the years
Why do you think he's never played songs from this album live? (other than the 91 tour).
I really don't know, it's such a shame as there are some great tracks on it which I think would fit in rather well with Mozzer's modern day live sets
30 years since its release has your view on the album changed at all?
Yes, it's a fantastic body of work and hugely underrated. That's the story of Mozzer's life, though!
What does the record mean to you?
It's a reminder of my life back in 1991 when I'd just left college and was applying to get a university place. Mozzer was my whole world back then (not that he isn't still a massive part of it now, to be fair!), and going to see him live for the first time at Wembley Arena in the July was a huge occasion for me. The Hammersmith Odeon gig on the KU tour in October of the same year is, to this day, THE best damned gig I've ever seen in my life, as my review which was penned and sent to Mozzer during that mighty and wondrous period demonstrates
