MANCHESTER MET LIFE
FIVE MINUTES WITH... ANGIE COOKE
I did this piece as a feature on the intranet at my current
workplace. This is the full version as the final one was slightly edited for publication. The husband was not impressed that I failed to mention him in
my ideal weekend scenario! Soz, Mr Jason "Entertainment" Cooke!

Name, role and department:
Angie Cooke, PA to Director of RKE, RKE Directorate
How long have you been at Manchester Met:
Since September 2017 as a temp, and permanently since May
2018. Happy days!
Favourite thing about the University:
I love how vibrant, energetic and fresh the university is compared to
previous organisations I’ve worked at. Everyone is so friendly, and
the MMU PA Network that I’m a member of is a great source for support, help and
advice.
The availability of vegan sarnies at lunchtime is an added bonus!
Ask Me, Ask Me, Ask Me! See what I did there?!
A typical working day:
I get in around 9, and check my emails to see if I need to pick up any
urgent tasks which I can get stuck into. Other than that, I look
after the diary for the Director of RKE which entails booking in meetings and
appointments for her. I order stationery and other bits and pieces
for the various teams I look after, as well as booking travel and accommodation
for my colleagues to attend courses and events around the country.
I also minute the meetings for a board on a regular basis.
What is your ideal weekend:
I love nothing more than going to my favourite record shop in
Manchester, which is Reel Around The Fountain Records in
Stretford. I also like to check out charity shops to see what
bargains I can find, and vintage emporiums as I’m into retro fashion, mainly
the 1950s-70s.

Other than that, going to see my mum and family over
in Huddersfield is always nice!
Interesting fact about you:
I appeared on BBC Four in 2016, on episode 3 of a programme called
“People’s History of Pop”. I was featured talking about my
collection of Smiths and Morrissey memorabilia, as I’ve been a fan since I was
a teen.
A somewhat more upholstered me on BBC Four back in 2016!
What are you reading, watching or listening to at the moment:
I’m reading an old text book I picked up recently covering the Basic
computer programming language (before it started being called coding!), I’ve
just finished watching Stranger Things which was amazing, and I’ve been
listening to a compilation called This Is Morrissey which has some of his
classic hits on it.

Favourite place in the region:
Without a shadow of a doubt, Salford Lads Club. I go there
regularly, and always buy some of their lovely merchandise while I’m
there. The volunteers are wonderful, and I’ve had my photo taken
outside the world famous sign above the doors. It has to be done!
The very first piccie of me outside my beloved Salford Lads Club!
Person you would most like to meet- past or present, real or fictional:
I would love to have met David Bowie, as I think he was a brilliant
artist and a fascinating personality. I was supposed to go and see
him in 1995, but didn’t bother after Morrissey dropped out as the support
act. I rue the day I made that decision!
The ill-fated tour that I bailed on! Boo!
What items would you take on a desert island and why:
A classic Sony Walkman, my Smiths and Morrissey cassettes and a
year’s supply of batteries in the hope that I’d be rescued by that time!
My beautiful stash of The Smiths and Morrissey cassettes!
